There's a reason sugar cookies are so popular. They're super delicious, perfect for decorating, and, best of all, beyond easy. Even if you can't bake anything that doesn't come out of a canister with a really happy doughboy on it, sugar cookies are so easy they're basically impossible to ruin. And sure, we know you can buy sugar cookies from every supermarket in America, but there's something to be said for baking something awesome by yourself, especially when you can share with friends and family.
We know it may sound a little presumptuous to call this the best sugar cookie recipe ever, but we're pretty sure it's close. With things you probably already have in your kitchen, or things you can buy in a few minutes from store and pretend you keep on hand at all times, you can make cookies that will be a true crowd pleaser.
Here's what you'll need (yields 12 -18 cookies depending on size):
- 1cup of butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 cups of white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour
And here's what you'll need to do:
In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar together until smooth. You can use a mixer for this, but you don't need to if you don't have one; mixing by hand is fine. Beat in the egg and almond. Once your ingredients are thoroughly mixed, stir in the salt and flour until blended fully. Cover your dough, and let it chill in the fridge for at least 15 minutes.
Once your dough is sufficiently chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. While your oven is heating, roll out the dough on a floured surface. Aim for a thickness of about a quarter of an inch. Cut the cookies into any shape you'd like, preferably with a cookie cutter by Frosted. We like a little whimsy in our baking, but if you're happy with circles, so be it. Place your cookies approximately one inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
When your oven is appropriately warm, bake each cookie sheet for 10 to 12 minutes, before the bottoms begin to brown. Although the need to eat them right away is understandable, do your best to let them cool before digging in. Once cool, use your favorite royal icing recipe and a splash of creativity to make them your own.
Look at you! You did it, and with the best sugar cookie recipe ever. Make them for yourself, for your friends, or for your next big event. Or just because. After all, you never really know when sugar cookies will come in handy.
